Tomatin Distillery is one of the easiest distilleries to find, just off the A9 main road, it is a perfect stop to explore a great distillery when crossing Cairngorm National Park coming from Edinburgh to Inverness. It was established in 1897, located in the Monadhliath Mountains, and one of the highest distilleries in Scotland at 315 metres above sea level.

Nick Ridout, owner of Lincoln Whisky Shop on Bailgate, Lincoln, shares with us his choice of ‘Whisky of The Month’ in this brand new article highlighting some of the great whiskies of the world. Over the next few editions we will feature some well known and some lesser known brands, but you can be certain that if it has been selected by Nick, you won’t be disappointed.

tomatinWhen Tomatin Distillery was established in 1897, the isolated and idyllic setting of Tomatin was almost perfect. Fresh Highland spring water could be drawn from the pristine Alt na Frith burn and it was next to a newly opened railway line.

However, there wasn’t a local workforce; the local inhabitants were scattered shepherds and cattle drovers. The company began a project of construction to accommodate its workforce.

Since that time the distillery has been at the heart of the community and the community at the heart of the distillery. This legacy has continued and Tomatin remains one of the few distilleries to provide a home for its dedicated craftsmen.

Tomatin Legacy is matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon barrels and virgin oak casks. This brings a light sweetness to the whisky, which boasts aromas of vanilla, marshmallow, pineapple and lemon. On the palate, gentle flavours of candy, pine, lemon sherbet, apple and sponge cake emerge ahead of a light, clean finish.

Legacy is an ideal starter single malt Scotch whisky for someone just beginning their exploration of the world of whiskies but at the same time its rich, fruity mouthfeel will appeal to the more dedicated sampler. It is also the introduction to the rest of the Tomatin range, which comprises a selection of different ages and finishes as its core selection plus occasional limited edition special releases.

For those who like a touch of smoke in their dram, Tomatin releases a lightly peated single malt called Cù Bòcan and they are also the owners of a top-quality blend known after Sir Walter Scott’s character in the eponymous book as The Antiquary.

Tomatin Legacy is available to purchase at Lincoln Whisky Shop, Bailgate, Lincoln.
